Obama addresses challenges of being a black man in Morehouse speech

“That’s what we’ve come to expect from you, Morehouse — a legacy of leaders — not just in our black community, but for the entire American community.  To recognize the burdens you carry with you, but to resist the temptation to use them as excuses.  To transform the way we think about manhood, and set higher standards for ourselves and for others.  To be successful, but also to understand that each of us has responsibilities not just to ourselves, but to one another and to future generations.  Men who refuse to be afraid. “

“Never become so enamored of your own smarts that you stop signing up for life’s hard classes. Keep your conclusions light and your curiosity ferocious. Keep groping in the darkness with ravenous desire to know more.” Melissa Harris-Perry outlines her life advice for graduates

For the past week, the White House has dealt with investigations into the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, IRS targeting of tax-exempt conservative groups, and controversy over the Justice Department seizing AP records. The trio of scandals seem to have had little effect on the public’s feelings about President Barack Obama in new polling.

Louisiana has the highest gun-murder rate in the country. Yet state lawmakers have pushed an aggressive campaign to loosen the state’s already lax gun laws. A coalition of Republicans and white Democrats has banded together to fight gun control efforts of a small minority of mostly black legislators. MSNBC.com’s Trymaine Lee traveled to Baton Rouge to tell this story.

Imagine if you had to explain to your three children and grandchild that they had to go to bed hungry because the deficit in the national budget is more important than the deficit of food on the table.

Mama Afrika, Miriam Makeba

Posted by RADIO NILO on Thursday, December 30, 2010 In : Africa
